As you level you can purchase the ability to chain more and more levels together for even greater rewards. Completing one mission will reward you with one item, but completing two in a row will reward you with two items of a higher level.
There's a nifty gambling system in the campaign. In the campaign you work your way through six worlds, and each level features monsters based around two genesis - heroes take double damage from Darkspore of the same genesis, so you'll need to juggle your heroes or you'll go down fast, especially in the horde moments where enemies are thrown at you constantly.Ĭompleting a level rewards you with an item, and completing objectives during the mission - killing a certain percentage of Darkspore, finding all of the obelisk chests and the like - increase your chance of the item being rare and powerful. Of course, if you're playing with noobs, you'll be picking up the slack and might not be able to play your favourite class. I liked the idea of the group powers Hex, and pretty soon you work out which abilities to use at the right time so, you get a good battleplan down. Each hero has access to four powers, their basic attack, two special abilities and a group ability that is shared with every hero in the unit. There are three classes of hero as well - Sentinels are the tanks, designed to soak damage, ravagers are fast melee units and tempests are the ranged units, healers and pet using heroes. Managing your variety in your squads is key to tough situations, but it's not a particularly hard game and you can spam your way through most situations, at least early on.Įach of the genetic heroes is linked to a 'genesis' - basically an element around which all of their powers are based. You'll need to do this when one hero gets low or on no health, or if the situation requires it such as if you find your team needs more heals or some tanking. Only one hero can be active at any time, but you can switch between any of the heroes only to suffer a small cooldown before being able to do it again. You can field three genetic heroes in a squad. As a Crogenitor, you control a small army of 'genetic heroes' - monsters with unique abilities. This is a co-op game, playing on your own can be tough but it also forces you to make use of your abilities more. But a good click-R-PG doesn't always need a good plot, we play them for the monster killing and the loot, and this game has both in spades. Strangely enough, this went wrong, and one of the experiments resulted in the Darkspore - horrific mutants that infected the rest of the galaxy with mutation mines that turned everything into more Darkspore. Players take the role of the last of the 'Crogenitors', ancient alien genetic engineers who seeded the universe with life and then tampered with it to create the perfect weapons.
I do enjoy a good RPG click-fest Bajo, so I was quite looking forward to this. Darkspore isn't a sequel to Spore it's a loosely affiliated follow-up and an entirely different style of game.
